5 Cool Things to do in Miami – Other than the Beach

February 19, 2015

Maybe it’s a little chilly. Maybe you’ve spent the first half of your vacay lying on the sand. Or maybe you just really like to discover new foods, activities and sights when you’re on vacation?

Well, rest assured you can do all of these things, and more, when you stay in South Beach. It may be famous for parties and poolsides, but dig a little deeper and you’ll find weeks and weeks worth of awesome culture and history. Here are some of our favourites:

Museums and Galleries

Have you heard of Art Basel Miami? Well, even if you haven’t, you could guess from the abundance of art galleries and incredible street murals that this part of the world has become a mecca for artists, designers and collectors. Wander the small galleries and showrooms in Wynwood for a taste of local up-and-coming talent, or take in one of the big guys – The Miami Museum of Contemporary art or the Miami Art Museum – for some world-famous names. If you prefer a little history, check out the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, a beautiful European-style estate surrounded by lush sub-tropical forests and walkways.

If you’d rather someone else did the research for you, just book a tour! Miami has something for everyone – bus tours, segway tours, bike tours, boat tours, food tours, seaplane tours, architecture tours and even ghost tours! Check out sites like Viator, Miami City Sightseeing, and Art Deco Tours for a selection that will keep even the pickiest visitors happy!

Miami is a paradise for foodies, whether they’re the kind of foodies who like to grab an authentic cuban sandwich from a kiosk, or sit down to a molecular gastronomy tasting menu. You can take an organised culinary tour to get a little taste of everything, or check out our previous posts on fusion food, brunch spots, and Cuban restaurants for inspiration!

Out on the water

Just because you don’t want to hang around on the beach, doesn’t mean you don’t want to experience a cool ocean breeze, does it? Why not try your hand at a totally new activity – like deep sea fishing or scuba diving – or just sit back and relax on a catamaran ride or an airboat on the everglades. YOu can spot manatees, crocodiles, and a few interesting locals on your ride!

Perfect your people watching

If you’re not in the mood to make bookings or plans while on vacation, then you should put on some comfy shoes and take a stroll down Miami’s 4-mile boardwalk. You never know what you might come across, from street performers to minor celebrities. Feet feeling tired? Rent a bike or a scooter and glide along on two wheels. And if you prefer a bird’s eye view – then you shouldn’t go home without trying parasailing over South Beach – it’s an unforgettable experience.
